For PHV, TfL doesn't publish the number of questions or the time. Older reports (2021–2024) say 37 questions in 45 minutes, so our full tests also offer a strict 45-minute timer. Last checked 3 Nov 2026.
How the questions work
- Multiple choice: choose one of 3 answers. Some multiple choice questions say "Select two": tick two answers out of four. A few say "select all correct answers". (TfL, taxi video 2025; Notice 06/25)
- Fill in the blanks: a sentence with gaps, usually 3, and one drop-down list for each gap. Every list has the same 6 words, and you can't use a word twice. The 3 extra words look like the right ones, such as careful and carefully. (TfL videos, 2024 and 2025)
- Reading: read a short text, then choose one of 3 answers. The answer is in the text. (TfL, taxi video 2025)
TfL doesn't say how many marks each type is worth. Our practice tests count a question right only when every part of it is right, so the score doesn't flatter you.
What "open book" means for you
The handbook only helps if you can find things fast. With about 1 minute 40 seconds per question, you have no time to read a whole section, and you can't bring notes. Learn where the topics are, using the contents page. Every explanation on SeruCoach shows the section and page, so you practise finding them.
When are you ready?
The pass mark is 60%. Before you book, try to score 75% or more on a full practice test, so a hard day still leaves room. Only 54% of PHV candidates passed (Oct 2025 – Apr 2026, TfL FOI).
