How to pass the SERU assessment
A 7-day plan, tactics for each type of question, and how to use your time in the test.
The 7-day plan
- Day 1: take a practice test firstTake the free practice test before you study. It shows your starting point and the sections you missed.
- Day 2: sections 1–3Licensing, your vehicle, bookings, airports and lost property. Learn the numbers: ages, days and deadlines.
- Day 3: sections 4–5Staying safe and driver behaviour. Know what to do, in what order, and who to call.
- Day 4: section 6Driving and parking in London. Where you may stop, wait and drive. This section has many exact rules.
- Day 5: section 7Safer driving: phones, speed, cyclists, children and seatbelts, and checks on your vehicle.
- Day 6: sections 8–10Equality, assistance dogs, wheelchair users, safeguarding and ridesharing.
- Day 7: a full practice testTake a full practice test with the timer. Read every explanation. Aim for 75% or more before you book.
Tactics for each question type
Multiple choice
Read the question twice. Look for words like "must", "never", "only" and "within". Cross out answers that are almost right but have the wrong number or time. When it says "Select two", tick exactly two. When it says "select all", check every option, one by one.
Fill in the blanks
Each gap has a drop-down list with the same 6 words, and you can't use a word twice. Half of the words are look-alikes, such as careful and carefully. Read the whole sentence first. Then ask what kind of word fits: a noun, a verb or a describing word. Check the words just before and after the gap. More on fill-in questions.
Reading
Read the question first, then the text. Find the sentence that answers it. The answer must come from the text, not from what you think is normal.
Use your time well
You have about 1 minute 40 seconds for each question. Work in two passes. First, answer what you know and flag the rest. Then go back to the flagged ones and check them in the handbook. Leave 5 minutes at the end to check in Review that no question is blank. You need 60% to pass, so one hard question is not a disaster.
PHV: TfL doesn't publish the time. Candidates in 2026 report 60 minutes; older reports say 45. Try one practice test with our strict 45-minute timer.
The night before
- Check your booking letter: time and address.
- Pack your original photo ID, the booking letter and a payment card (not American Express).
- Read the numbers tables in our section guides one last time.
- Sleep. Plan to arrive early: parking near the centre is hard.

Questions
Is the SERU test hard?
It is harder than many people expect: only 54% of PHV candidates passed (Oct 2025 – Apr 2026, TfL FOI). The questions use exact handbook rules and careful English. With a week of steady practice, most people can get there.
How long should I study for SERU?
About one week of 1–2 hours a day works for many drivers. Start with a practice test, so you spend your time on your weak sections.
Do I need to learn the whole handbook by heart?
No. Learn the rules with numbers, and learn where each topic is in the handbook. Understand the rest in your own words.
