Map key for our practice map

The symbols on our OpenStreetMap practice map. In the test, a paper key sits on your desk; its symbols look different, the rules are the same.

Last checked 3 Nov 2026.

  • Motorway: blue.
  • A road or B road: yellow, with its number in red (A10, B100).
  • Dual carriageway: two roads side by side. Keep left. The strip between them is the central reservation.
  • Gap in the reservation: only where a drawn road joins the two halves. Road-name lettering is never a gap.
  • Slip road: a short link onto or off a main road. Follow its arrows.
  • Street: white.
  • One-way: drive only the way the red arrow points.
  • No entry: you can come out of this end, not go in.
  • Banned turn: a red ring bans that turn. A blue sign allows only that way.
  • Bridge: the road goes over a river, railway or road, with a dark edge. No turns onto what is below.
  • Tunnel: dashed edge. The road goes under. No turns inside, and none onto roads above.
  • Flyover or underpass: one road crosses over another. No junction where they cross.
  • Pedestrian street: pink. Not for cars. A Congestion Charge tint on a printed map is different: it is a charge, not a ban.
  • Restricted access: red stripes (orange: at some times). Not for your route.
  • Bus-only street or bus gate: red stripes, as Oxford Street, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road are. Not for your route.
  • Barrier or bollards: you can't drive through this point.
  • Park: green. Roads inside royal parks are restricted: red stripes. Go round.
  • Footpath or footbridge: a thin dashed line, also where it crosses a road or railway. Not a road.
  • Railway: cross only where a road crosses it.
  • Closed road: red dashes, only in the Practice hint and on results. In the test a closed road is never drawn: it is only in the question's Note. Don't drive on it or cross it.
