North is up. The eight points are N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW.
For "which way are you driving", go along the road from the place it names, then read the direction.
On a grid, count the junctions you pass, not the numbers on them. Paths can go diagonally and take 3 or 4 steps.
